Abstracto

  • The equivalent conductance of L3O+ (L = H, D) in mixtures of protium and deuterium oxides can be described by the equation Λn0 = (1 - n + 0.59re)3/(1 - n + 0.69)3. This result indicates that three protons contribute to the overall kinetic isotope effect. This proton inventory indicates that under the action of an applied electric field, the classical Grotthus mechanism does not take place. A short "Grotthus chain", involving two intermediate water molecules, is consistent with the result.
