  • The exotic look of Neotropical long-petaled slipper orchid profoundly fascinated the horticultural community in the second half of XIX Century, and species of this group were often figured in illustrated journals and books of the times - mostly under erroneous names. The confusion between the South American Phragmipedium caudatum and its Central-American relative, Phragmipedium humboldtii, led to a nomenclatural mess, with the multiplication of names at the specific and infraspecific ranks. We consider here some illustrations of the XIX century that, albeit referring to varieties of Phragmipedium caudatum depict in our opinion true specimens of the Mesoamerican Phragmipedium humboldtii. As for some of these »varieties« no types were ever prepared, their names should be typified to avoid confusion in the future.
