The hydrolysis of n-alkyl acetates catalyzed by Dowex 50W-X2 was studied at 40 degree C in water. The rate increases in going from AcOMe to AcOBu, indicating the importance of hydrophobic interactions in this system. A rate-pressure study also confirms this catalytic mechanism.
